parimonious silence

i am in love
with the silence of
writing

without sound
without movement
of eye, of lip

thought that
mimics
a sea, its shores molded
by flow and crest
by ebb and fall
heart beats; separate, same
in rhythmic cadence,
consistently phased, unremarked

i sail
this silence - not sullen or spent
softened
across the bow of wishbone
held, allayed by mast of a dream, gathering incandescent
dust of demi-gods parimonious
of lost treasure
understanding its salten water, the need
of its rhythm,

my need of
silence

  8. Sign me up for this sweet voyage -- The analogies between writing and sailing, diving, retrieving treasure, carving wavelike forms, each wave a line, the poem sailing from first word to last. The play of silence between thought and sea -- merged by the mind's womb, or vice versa -- is wonderful. I'm sure I'm not surprising you with any of my sympathies; suffice to say "amen," "ahoy!" and "thar she blew!"! - Brendan

  18. Perhaps my favorite lines in this sonorous poem: "softened / across the bow of wishbone / held, allayed by mast of a dream".

I think of how much we "write" in our heads, hear the music of the words there first.
