Sanctuary

Blades of grass and passive leaves
That lie beneath the stones
Rest on a breathe of mossy air
That now becomes my own

Place to find a quiet space
Of deeper ecstasy
The lines that mark the forest heart
Reveal a map to sanctuary

A well of life to feed the soul
Of those who bathe within its water
I cleanse the footprints I have left
Not stepping one stone further

Lying nearer the dwelling place
Of ones who came before
I take the vow of not looking back
And close behind me sanctuary’s door

  1. to not look back says so much itself...i am intrigued by your spelling in the title, only because it is repeated in your tag...intentional?

  23. i'm not a big fan of rhyming because when you aren't a good writer it can come off as contrived and forced... but this really flowed elegantly.. great subtle piece..

  36. Beautifully done! Amazing first stanza, the mood of the poem is wonderful and captures the essence of the forest, of sanctuary, of stillness and peace, of the ancient stones....the photo perfectly illustrates the poem as well. I especially love "I cleanse the footprints I have left" and "the dwelling place of ones who came before." Lovely.

  37. I love how this sounds when read aloud:

    >>>

A well of life to feed the soul
Of those who bathe within its water
I cleanse the footprints I have left
    Not stepping one stone further

    >>>

    LOVELY on so many levels.

  40. Obviously you are a forest lover. Not sure about the stepping stones, though. Seems like you are concerned about slipping on the moss! It always pays to be careful, and not look back. Excellent writing!
