wanting of a sin eater

any will left
will be in wanting
wanting of a sin eater, a sin eater
capable of digesting
capable of considering - the volume, volumes of con-jointed col-lab-o-rations
an anointed proponent of protagonistic promise
beyond a porthole of pigeon holes
beyond a percolated fire and brim

capable (stop)
holding (stop)
capable of holding off a rim of fire, flames...raining
repentance resounded
at a gate, the gate; a keeper, a keystone con-verter, con-verting
con-jured up comedy (errored)
as divine, decadent
decency

I read a book a couple of years back entitled Confessions of the Last Sin Eater.....a memoir, the whole concept of sin eating and the sin eaters role has always fascinated me, the ritual of sin eating is said to have been practiced in many parts of the United Kingdom for years and carried over and practiced in the Appalachian Mountains of America .....bkm

Note: hopefully my husband will be home in a couple days.....though there is still all the unknowns to deal with...but all is stable for right now...blessings...bkm

  2. Makes you wonder if the terribly corpulent fallen angels of our obesity-ridden culture have been gorging on the materialist sins of their fathers and mothers ... Hell is eternal repitition compulsion, no end to the smorgasbord of wrongs, a wicked commedia, an infernal hot-dog eating contest which goes on forever for the amusement of rebel angels. Yet it all has to be digested, doesn't it? Broken down and left behind, out of the behind and into the ground. Jonah repented and was spared the abyssal shitpile, but he still had to digest a lot of truth to get back to shore ... Brendan

  3. Wonderful news! And after all, today is all we really have. And come to think about it, our lives are filled with the "unknowns." Never really "know." Since I have never given sin too much thought, and always liked the idea that sin was just an archer's term. It seems reasonable. We are innocent and pure, just miss the mark sometimes, even as our arrow does on occasion. Today, may all your arrows hit the mark!

But I love the idea of the "sin eaters." I think they look something like erasures.

  4. Whoa! Coming here directly after One Stop leaves my little head spinning, spinning. You should link this.
Love the reference to Dante (are there sin eaters in the Inferno?). Love this poem, so powerful & so interesting. The imagery haunts.
    Thank you.

P.S. Glad your husband is stable; fingers crossed he is home soon!

  7. This poem has a lot of depth. So good, Barbara! I'm happy to hear your husband will be home soon. One day at a time, may he continue to feel better. You'll both be happier back home, I'm sure.

  8. I like the way you've chosen to emphasize and break up your words here to force the reader to think a bit differently, a bit more deeply. An interesting concept, and not a job I'd want to apply for--where would it ever end? Thanks for the update also, and good to know things are at least holding their own for now. Just being home will be a relief I'm sure.

  10. I like your take on the concept of "sin eating". I found myself slowed down while reading the broken words, a desirable effect in such a poem.

I saw your note at Glynn's; am so pleased for you and your husband that the prognosis turned out well. Blessings.

  12. What a concept here with the sin eater image and all that conjures up. This is fabulous and a bit frightening I think.

  13. I understand what you said in your comment, that writing is the only thing in your life that is routine right now. I feel the same. One step, then another. You, I sense, are in the same place. Glad about your husband.

As for this poem, I guess I don't understand the concept of sin eating. Have never heard of it. I need to research it. But your poem, as it is written, is rich with wonderful word choices and images. You are a poet of many styles, and I appreciate that!

  15. Barbara,
I too had never heard of the concept, of sin eating. Interesting indeed and an interesting poem.

I do hope that all goes well for your husband and you as well.
    Best Regards,
    Eileen

  16. I read that one, too, BKM, and it came to mind while I read your poem. The form and cadence here add additional dimensions to the careful diction. Well done. Here is mine for this week:
