Ode to a Yellow Bird

between my heart and Scriptured word
sits my love for a yellow bird
that lives on branch
beneath my sill
with blackest eye, and black black bill

when he speaks
it breaks my will and lightens all that appears obscured
a song to sweet i have never heard
comes from the breast
of a yellow bird

as summer days now slip away
and frosted nights dress soon unfurled
i breathe in the notes as if to sing
the love known since
christened
by a blessed spring

and a yellow bird beneath my sill
with blackest eye, and black black bill

"a song to sweet i have never heard
    comes from the breast
    of a yellow bird"

well, i am not very good in biology but i wonder if birds have breast.

the first five lines are extraordinary. they completely drew me to read this poem to its fullest.

you just reminded me that summer is leaving.

  2. Birds are so slight, like puffs of air, here and then gone. And yet, they move us, and give joy, don't they? This is a beautiful poem, bkm. I do so enjoy coming here and reading what you've posted.

  5. I am not a poet or a writer so I am not familiar with the lingo but I do know what I like, and I like your writing! You are so talented! Do you work at your writing, making edits and rewriting until you get it just right or does it just go onto paper and that is basically the whole process? Thank you for sharing your poem with me.

I came by today to introduce myself. My name is Sherry and I have joined the Bloggerette Sorority. I have only been blogging for almost 30 days so I missed the Rush, but I look forward to taking part in future events. I would be honored if you would like to come by for a visit at http://scrappingwithsherry1.blogspot.com/ Hope to see you there!

    Take Care~ Sherry

  8. Beautiful. I learned yesterday that yellow birds seek out yellow flowers, purple birds purple blooms and so on. They see in color--how cool is that!

I love the rhythm of this and "the song so sweet i never heard..."
    Thank you.

  9. Hi, Barbara. It's so nice to see you. This is another beautiful poem. I love the idea of breathing in the notes! That's the best way in the world to hear a bird's song.

I love the yellow finches that swarm our feeder, too. It's such a sunny sight to see, isn't it? Thanks for sharing the lovely words and picture!

  22. This is breathtaking. My favorite kind of poetry. It is work like this that makes me wish I was a publisher.

I am so touched by this stanza:

as summer days now slip away
and frosted nights dress soon unfurled
i breathe in the notes as if to sing
    the love known since
    christened
    by a blessed spring

Do you know what I like about your writing? It is rhythmic and poetic without being cliched. Your imagery is just splendid.

Thank you for linking this. Truly lovely.

  25. That first stanza is breathtaking, barbara, and the whole poem is musical and light, full of the essence of the yellow bird.(I think it's a goldfinch--they are like flying daffodils here in the spring.)Glad you dusted this off and brought it back out.

  27. Thank you for visiting The Friday Forgotten and linking your post. Your imagination and creativity should never lie dusty in a dark corner of your blog. We are happy to help clear away the cobwebs.

I enjoyed the rhythm and flow of this poem. I think more and more we tend to go away from any sort of form and poetry so when I do see it I truly enjoy it. It is worth a few more reads.
