embezzlement

there is an embezzlement
of the
characters that fall
between us
              and the sandcastles
built beneath us

there is a breeze
that floats over this stellar sky
as the rhythm
of heartbeats ripple across shorelines

un-emptied, un-touched...a crab,
a shell of something once was,
a thought wrapped in a tide pool of

un-certainity

but, i love you.....said

i will take a second look
at this moment - as chances seldom come twice

once a thief always a thief?
i do not know

i should ask the crab ...... (i)

                                           sup-pose

  1. Not sure if this is politic, but your poem made me think of Rajani's words about fear of that predictable love...

  2. The image of the crab, now a shell full of echoes... lingers in the mind, answering so many question by no longer being.

  3. The breeze, the stellar sky, the crab shell ad the wondering......such a mesmerizing and beautiful poem, my friend.

  4. The memory... the thing that fell between... maybe only when we try to remember we can see (and maybe forgive) the thieves.

  5. The eeriness, the emptiness...this feels like a held breath.

  6. So good to run into you and your wonderful words again, Brian. It's been too long, as I've been mostly missing from the blog world. Hope all is well with you and yours; your poem left me with a vaguely unsettled feeling.

  8. This lovely write feels brooding to me. My thoughts focused on, "I will take a second look at this moment--as chances seldom come twice." This is something I can relate to as I now more pause and reconsider...things.

  9. I love the shape of this poem, Barbara, and the way you’ve used white space for emphasis, especially in the lines:
    ‘characters that fall
    between us
    and the sandcastles
    built beneath us’
    and
    ‘…the rhythm
    of heartbeats ripple across shorelines’.
I also love the description of the crab as ‘a shell of something once was, a thought wrapped in a tide pool of un-certainty’.

  10. It's knowing how much to believe, versus the emotional desire..the degree of investment involved...
